AHLiterary.com is a fun and challenging place for short fiction writers of all stripes and kinds -- beginning, experienced, and everyone in between. We welcome entries of most genres of short fiction, written in English, from both domestic and international writers.
2009 was an exciting year at Abbey Hill Literary! We’ve been privileged to review hundreds of short stories that demonstrated hard work, vivid imagination, skilled writing, and approaches to our prompts and scenarios that could only come from a very focused and talented group of authors. You’ve taken us to other times and worlds, given us visions of love, hate, terror, and tenderness, to name a few perspectives, and all with very original twists. We’ve laughed out loud, paused in amazement, and altogether admired many of your entries. Thank you for sharing your efforts with us, and in many cases, our enthusiastic readers.
As we enter 2010, we’re continuing the challenge theme, which utilizes a choice of seven opening prompts or scenarios each quarter. Many of you have told us they “jump start” your creative flow, and we’re pleased you’ve found them useful, and at times, even provocative.
In addition, we’ve heard from a number of authors who would like the opportunity to submit works that are not derived from the challenges and scenarios. Abbey Hill Literary is happy to announce that we’re adding a separate quarterly flash fiction contest (up to 750 words) with, at this time, a single prize of $100.00. The use of prompts and scenarios are NOT required, and your story may incorporate any theme or plot (excluding, as always, erotica or extreme violence or gore). Critiques will continue to be available, for both standard and flash fiction entries.
Abbey Hill Literary would also like to recognize, and thank once again, the skilled and talented judges who provide the critical, arms-length evaluations of the finalists and determine the winning entries. Their “eye” for fine fiction and willingness to provide their professional services are very much appreciated.

Abbey Hill Literary is very pleased to welcome our 1st Quarter judge, Ms. Moira Allen, who is the editor and publisher of Writing-World.com, one of the world's largest websites for writers. She has published eight books and more than 350 columns and articles in a variety of magazines, including The Writer, Writer's Digest, Byline, Cats, British Heritage, and many others.
Her books include Starting Your Career as a Freelance Writer; The Writer's Guide to Queries, Pitches and Proposals (of which a new edition is forthcoming in spring 2010); and Writing to Win: The Colossal Guide to Writing Contests.
